Battery storage

Keep the power you make until you need it.

Solar makes most of its electricity while the house is empty. A battery holds it back for the evening, when it is not.

Why a battery

Solar generates while the house is empty.

Without somewhere to put it, the surplus is sold to the grid for a fraction of what it costs to buy the same power back after dark.

Midday

The house takes what it needs first, and everything spare charges the battery instead of going out to the grid.

Evening

Lights, cooking, television and the car all run off the battery, so the units you use after dark are ones you already made.

Overnight

On a cheap night tariff the battery can top up while rates are low, and cover the morning before the sun is up.

What we install

Sized against your bills, not a package.

We look at a year of your usage and how much the roof will make before putting a size to it. Too small and it is empty by nine, too big and you have paid for capacity that never fills.

Common questions

Is a battery worth it with solar?+

For most homes, yes. Without one, spare daytime generation is exported for a few pence a unit while you buy evening power at full price. A battery closes that gap. We show you the figures for your own usage before you decide.

Can I add a battery to solar panels I already have?+

Usually, yes. It depends on the inverter you have: some accept a battery directly, others need an additional unit alongside them. We check what you have at the survey and tell you which it is.

Can I have a battery without solar?+

Yes. On a tariff with cheap overnight rates, a battery can fill up at night and run the house through the expensive part of the day. It is a smaller saving than a battery paired with panels, and it depends on your tariff, so we go through the numbers first.

Where does the battery go?+

Typically a garage, utility room or loft, or on an outside wall. It wants somewhere out of the way with reasonable temperatures and a straightforward cable run to the consumer unit. We confirm the position at the survey.

Will it power my home in a power cut?+

Only if the system is designed for it, which needs specific hardware and a separate backup circuit. Tell us it matters and we will design for it from the start, as it is far easier to include now than to add later.
